perhaps your god is asleep... or away on a journey...

Recently we have had a mini controversy about election campaigns and satire/free speech/jackassery. I'm going to take this in a slightly different direction that you have probably seen so far. What really bothers me about this is not so much the idea of satire in campaigns (which can be in good humor and can be used to enlighten) as that most of what is trying to be justified as "satire" is merely scoffing at the idea that God talks to people (none of the signs say "maybe He told you to run, maybe He didn't - but it would have been prudent to keep that to yourself"). So it would seem to me that whether this be satire or jackassery, the target is the fact that one or more candidates believes he was told or sanctioned by God to run for office. One has to ask what kind of change are the critics seeking?
